The complaint sounds like a model problem. You run an article through your AI writing tool, the output comes back technically complete, and it's thin — organized, readable, and saying almost nothing. Adjust the settings. Try a different tool. Maybe the model needs to be better.
It usually isn't the model. The model is doing exactly what it was asked to do. The problem is what it was asked to do, and until that changes, the thin output will keep coming regardless of which tool you use or how many tokens you're paying for.
Understanding why requires understanding something about how AI text generation actually works — not at the level of neural network architecture, but at the level of what happens when you give it a broad topic and ask for an article.
What a Model Does With a Vague Prompt
When you give a language model a title like "best practices for email marketing" and a word count, it does something reasonable given what it has: it produces the most statistically probable article about email marketing best practices. That means it synthesizes the average of everything written on the topic that appeared in its training data.
The average article about email marketing best practices covers list segmentation, personalization, send-time optimization, mobile formatting, and A/B testing. Probably in roughly that order, with roughly the same weight given to each. Because those are the things that appear most often when people write about email marketing best practices.
Your article will be about those things too. So will the next one generated by any other model, with any other tool, given the same prompt. The output isn't wrong — email segmentation genuinely is important — but it doesn't say anything that isn't already covered in thousands of articles. There's no hierarchy of importance, no opinion about which of these things matters most given a specific situation, no observation that pushes against the conventional list. It's the average, which is a different thing from being useful.
This is what thin content is: correct coverage without depth, produced by a model that was given nothing specific to push against.
Why Broad Prompts Always Produce Coverage Without Depth
The model's statistical synthesis tendency means broad prompts will always produce content that looks like other content on the same topic. This isn't fixable by changing the model or paying for a better subscription tier. It's a feature of how language generation works.
Depth in writing requires having a more specific thing to say than the average article. A piece of content that covers the same subtopics in roughly the same order at roughly the same level of detail is not a deep treatment of a topic — it's a restatement of the existing body of content in slightly different words. Readers may not be able to articulate why this feels thin, but they experience it. They finish the article with roughly the same understanding they arrived with. The article has added length to the topic, not understanding.
The model can't produce depth from a vague prompt because depth requires having something specific to say, and the prompt hasn't given it anything specific. It has given it a topic, and it has produced an article about that topic. Those are not the same as producing a specific argument about a topic.
The tools that advertise depth as a feature are still subject to this constraint. Longer articles aren't deeper articles. More subheadings aren't more insight. A model that can generate 3,000 words instead of 1,000 is producing a longer average treatment, not a better-reasoned one.
The Brief Is What Changes This
The fix is not to find a model that produces deeper output. It's to give whatever model you're using something specific to produce depth around.
That specific something is a brief — and a brief is not a title with more words. A useful brief has four components, and each one forces the model away from the average treatment.
The audience with a specific problem. Not "marketers" — "a marketing manager at a B2B SaaS company who has been writing weekly newsletters for a year, getting reasonable open rates, and can't figure out why signups from the newsletter are low." That person has a specific situation. Content written for them has to engage with that situation rather than covering the general topic.
The argument or angle. The one thing the article claims that isn't the conventional treatment. It can be as simple as "the standard advice on email marketing prioritizes open rates, and for most subscription-driven businesses that's the wrong metric to optimize for." Now the article has something to argue. The model can't drift back toward the average because the average doesn't argue anything.
The tension or complication. The place where the conventional advice breaks down, or the edge case where the recommended approach doesn't apply. Thin content never acknowledges complications because the average treatment of a topic doesn't include them — they require having formed an opinion about the topic, which requires having thought about it.
What the reader should understand differently at the end. Not a summary of the article — a specific change in understanding or capability. If you can't answer this, the article probably doesn't have a reason to exist in its current form.
What a Brief-Driven Brief Actually Looks Like
Concretely, here's the difference. A topic-level prompt: "Write a 1,500-word article about email marketing best practices for SaaS companies."
A brief-level prompt: "Write for a growth marketer at an early-stage SaaS company who is getting 40% open rates on their newsletter but seeing almost no conversions to trial signups. Argue that the problem is email architecture, not content — specifically, that they're optimizing for engagement when they should be optimizing for a single conversion action per email. Cover: what engagement-optimized emails look like and why they underperform for conversion, what conversion-optimized email structure looks like, and why the 'keep it interesting' instinct is correct in newsletters but wrong in trial-driving sequences. Target: someone who knows email marketing but hasn't separated newsletter logic from conversion email logic."
The second brief produces a different article. It has a claim. It has a specific audience with a specific problem. It pushes against an instinct the reader probably has (keep it interesting). It has something to demonstrate rather than just something to cover.
This is available with any model and any tool. The capability to produce depth was always there. It requires a more specific input than most workflows provide.
Why Most Workflows Skip This Step
Briefs take time. Not much time — a useful brief for a 1,500-word article can be written in five to ten minutes — but it's time that happens before any output is visible, which makes it easy to skip.
The AI writing workflow is seductive precisely because it makes output immediate. You enter a title, you get an article, you're done with step one before you've decided what step one is supposed to accomplish. That immediacy creates a strong pull toward skipping the thinking that should happen first.
The result is a content operation that publishes a lot and says very little. The articles are indexed. They target the right keywords. They're not wrong. But they don't have a reason to rank above the other thin articles covering the same keywords in roughly the same way, and over time, they don't.
The brief is the thing that makes AI writing tools produce content worth publishing. Not a better model. Not more tokens. Not a different tool. The specific thinking that defines what the article is for — that's the missing input, and it was always the missing input.
The Question This Raises
If depth requires human thinking as an input, and the value of an AI writing tool is that it reduces the human time required to produce content, then the actual leverage is in the brief stage — not the generation stage.
A person who can write a precise brief in five minutes and generate from it gets most of the benefit: the mechanical drafting work disappears, but the thinking that made the article worth drafting stays. A person who skips the brief and generates from a title gets almost none of it. They're faster, but they're faster at producing something nobody needed.
That asymmetry explains a lot about who is and isn't seeing results from AI writing tools. It's not the tool. It's whether the thinking step got preserved when everything else got automated.
