AI Content That Fails E-E-A-T: What Google Is Actually Penalizing

E-E-A-T gets cited constantly in conversations about AI content and almost always incorrectly. The misunderstanding usually runs in one direction: people treat it as a rule against AI writing, as if Google's quality evaluators are looking for evidence of human authorship and penalizing anything that might have been machine-generated.

That's not what E-E-A-T is. And understanding what it actually is changes both which AI content is at risk and what you can do about it.

What E-E-A-T Actually Measures

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It's a framework used in Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines — the manual that trains the human raters who assess whether Google's algorithm is doing its job. It's not a direct algorithmic signal in the way that backlinks or page speed are, but it describes what Google's systems are trying to identify and surface.

The addition of the first E — Experience — happened in December 2022, and it's the one that has the most direct bearing on AI content. Experience refers to first-hand knowledge: evidence that the person who wrote the content has actually done the thing they're writing about. A review of a backpacking tent written by someone who backpacked in it. A guide to managing diabetes written by someone living with it or treating patients who do. Content about recovering from a layoff written by someone who has been laid off.

AI models don't have this. They have training data, which is the aggregated record of what other people have experienced. There's a meaningful difference between those two things, and the Experience dimension of E-E-A-T is designed to surface that difference.

This is the E-E-A-T problem for AI content — not that it was generated by an AI, but that it cannot authentically demonstrate first-hand experience, and in categories where first-hand experience is what makes content trustworthy, the absence of it is a liability.

The Content Categories Most at Risk

Not all topics are equally sensitive to E-E-A-T evaluation. Google has a category it calls YMYL — Your Money or Your Life — that covers topics where poor-quality information could have significant consequences for the reader. Medical decisions. Financial planning. Legal questions. Safety information.

For YMYL content, the bar for Experience and Expertise is high. A guide to managing hypertension that reads like a synthesis of other guides, without any evidence of the author's actual clinical experience or professional credentials, will score poorly under E-E-A-T regardless of how well-structured it is. This is true whether it was written by an AI, by a generalist freelancer, or by someone who read a lot about the topic but has no direct expertise.

Beyond YMYL, Experience matters most in categories where the value of the content comes from specificity that only comes through doing. Product reviews. Technical tutorials. Business case studies. Travel recommendations. In these categories, the reader is trying to benefit from someone else's direct experience, and content that can't deliver that is less useful than content that can.

AI content in these categories fails E-E-A-T not because it was produced by AI but because the production method can't supply what the reader actually needs. The format is present. The coverage is there. The thing the reader came for — evidence that someone actually did this, with real results and real complications — is absent.

The Patterns That Signal Absent Experience

There are specific characteristics of AI-generated content that signal missing first-hand experience to both human evaluators and likely to ranking systems.

Comprehensive coverage without an opinion hierarchy. Human experts who have actually done something have views about what matters most. A real financial planner writing about retirement accounts has opinions about which approaches are overrated and which are underused. AI synthesis produces balanced coverage where everything gets equal space. The balance is a tell — experienced practitioners are never this balanced.

Absence of failure modes or complications. Content produced from training data about a topic covers what works. It rarely covers what doesn't work, what breaks down under specific conditions, or what the author tried first that turned out to be wrong. First-hand experience almost always includes these things. Their absence is a signal that the content came from aggregated success stories rather than direct engagement with the subject.

Generic examples. AI-generated content illustrates points with examples that could appear in any article on the topic. Real practitioners draw examples from their actual experience — specific, named, detailed enough to be verifiable. The difference between "for example, a SaaS company might find that..." and "we ran this test on a client's onboarding sequence in Q3 and the results showed..." is the difference between illustrated coverage and demonstrated experience.

Hedging that goes nowhere. AI models are trained to be accurate and to avoid false claims. This produces content that qualifies every statement without ever landing on a specific position. "This approach may work well for some situations but may not be appropriate for others." Expert content qualifies too, but then it specifies: appropriate for what, inappropriate for what, and how do you know which situation you're in.

What You Can Do About Each

The Experience gap is the hardest E-E-A-T problem for AI content to solve because it's genuinely about information the model doesn't have. You can't generate first-hand experience. But you can supply it.

The most effective approach is to write what might be called experience scaffolding into your brief. Before generating, identify the specific experience that would make this article trustworthy. A tutorial about cold email outreach: which specific tactics have you tested, what were the actual response rates, what broke down at scale? A review of a software tool: which specific use cases did you try, which features failed to deliver on the marketing copy, what did you learn after the first month versus the first week?

Provide this as context in your generation prompt. The model can incorporate real experience data if you supply it, even though it can't generate that data on its own. This turns the generation step from producing coverage to producing a structured treatment of your actual experience — which is what E-E-A-T is looking for.

For the Expertise and Authoritativeness dimensions, the leverage is in the surrounding content rather than the article itself. Author bio pages that show credentials. Internal links to other content that demonstrates depth of knowledge in the space. External links to sources that support specific claims, with enough editorial judgment in the selection to signal that you know the space well enough to evaluate sources.

Trustworthiness is largely structural: transparent authorship, clear citations for factual claims, no conflicts of interest undisclosed, no claims that outrun the evidence the article provides. AI content fails on trust most often not because it's AI but because it makes confident-sounding claims without linking to anything that would let the reader verify them.

The Practical Risk Assessment

Most blog content doesn't live in YMYL territory, and for content outside YMYL, E-E-A-T is a softer evaluation. A how-to guide on productivity workflows or an overview of email marketing strategy is not subject to the same scrutiny as a guide to managing a chronic health condition.

This matters for prioritization. If your content is primarily in non-YMYL categories, E-E-A-T violations are less likely to be causing your ranking problems and the attention is better spent on content quality fundamentals — depth of coverage, specificity of argument, genuine usefulness to the reader.

If you're publishing in health, finance, legal, or safety categories, E-E-A-T is a real and direct concern. AI content in these spaces without genuine expertise supplied in the brief is a meaningful ranking liability. The content can be made E-E-A-T compliant, but it requires significantly more input from someone with actual expertise in the subject — which changes the economics of AI content in those categories.

What This Means for AI Content Strategy

E-E-A-T is not an argument against AI content. It's a description of what makes content trustworthy, and trustworthiness has always been a requirement for ranking well in categories where readers depend on accurate, useful information.

The AI writing workflows that produce E-E-A-T compliant content are the ones that treat the model as a drafting tool rather than a knowledge source. You supply the experience, the specific examples, the expert judgment, and the position. The model builds the structure around what you give it. The result has the one thing AI can't generate on its own: evidence that someone who actually knows what they're talking about was involved.

That was the standard before AI writing tools existed, and it's the standard now. The tools didn't change what good content is. They changed how fast you can produce the structure around it — which is valuable, as long as you're still producing the substance that goes inside.
